Abstract:
|
The first years of teaching are a huge challenge and it is generally understood that support systems are needed for beginning teachers. Research shows that well designed induction programs are essential to develop of new teachers and to retain them in the profession. A full year program focusing on the unique needs of early-career, middle school science teachers was framed and implemented by a team of formal and informal educators under the leadership of the author. The overarching intention of this program was helping the new teachers to develop the skills and practice for effective inquiry science instruction. Monthly guided-discussion sessions where the participants could interact with each other and share ideas on relevant topics focused on student learning were an integral part of this program. I will share some of the lessons we learned along the way.
