AAPT Fun Run/Walk

Tuesday, February 7 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. - Meet in the lobby of the Doubletree Hotel at 6:15 a.m. Water will be provided. The $20 donation will benefit AAPT's programs. E. Leonard Jossem Dinner

February 4, 2012 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. - Join us for an elegant reception and dinner in honor of the life and legacy of Len Jossem. Len Jossem was one of the prime international leaders in physics education. The net proceeds from this event will benefit the E. Leonard (Len) Jossem International Education Fund and, accordingly, a portion of the dinner cost is tax deductible. These funds will be available to any AAPT member actively engaged in the teaching and learning of physics: graduate students, post doctoral fellows, and high school, college, and university faculty.

Out-Laws of Physics Live Performance!

Tuesday, February 7 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This AAPT fundraiser will feature a lively five-person band formed in November 2003 by members of the Physics Department at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. After working together more than 15 years in the Cal Poly Pomona Physics Department, in 2003 four Out-Laws (Jolene Houser, John Mallinckrodt, John Jewett, Harvey Leff) formed this high-energy band, and bassist John Hadden joined in 2006." The Out-Laws of Physics genre is vintage country music, with some rock and roll, blues and a little swing.

SOFIA Tour

FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 2012 DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION! Wednesday, February 8 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (You Must Register no later than January 6, 2012 for security processing.) Science in the Stratosphere: Tour of NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). NASA'sSOFIA is an airborne observatory built into a 747 that carries a 100" telescope to the stratosphere to perform infrared astronomy. It's the world's largest portable telescope! Join this NASA tour to the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility (DAOF) in Palmdale, CA. You'll hear science and technology talks, tour the observatory and the hangar, participate in a hands-on infrared workshop, and take home a kit of Standards-based, classroom materials. You'll learn new tricks for teaching about the EM spectrum, as you explore infrared astronomy. Learn how you can propose to fly onboard SOFIA and participate in a research mission, collaborating with SOFIA scientists, engineers, and educators. Participants must be able to walk up a steep and narrow stairway unassisted or will only view the aircraft from the ground. There is no elevator or accessible walkway to the aircraft. An entertaining bus ride and lunch are included. Must be at least 18 years old, US Citizen with Government-issued ID. Registration deadline is January 6 to allow for processing of security pass. No open-toed shoes or short pants are allowed at DAOF facility. Cameras okay.
