Dear AAPT Members, Colleagues and Friends: The American Association of Physics Teachers would like to thank you for your support of the Physics_Team over the many years. It is because of your dedication to teaching that this program has been so successful. As a teacher who has encouraged your students to participate in the U.S. Physics_Team selection process (representing our nation in the International Physics Olympiad), we hope you will be pleased to know that we are making several enhancements to help engage and recognize more students. One of the lead changes, is our new “F = ma” Preliminary Mechanics-only test, accessible to more physics students, which we hope to engage. There is value in involving all your physics students in this program. Thank you for encouraging them, regardless of the outcome of the team selection. On behalf of the physics community, we appreciate your support. Going forward, here are our plans: |

Registration ProcedureWe have eliminated the nomination process. Simply complete the short registration form on the back of this brochure and return it to AAPT. For your convenience, visit the on-line registration form or you can also download the PDF form to fill out and send to us. New F=ma Preliminary ExamWe have significantly improved our preliminary exam by lowering the overall difficulty level. Many more students can be encouraged to take it. Most questions may be answered by students who are enrolled in or have taken AP Physics C – Mechanics or AP Physics B. Exam ProcedureTeachers need only to fill out the AAPT registration form on the back of this bulletin and return it to AAPT. We will no longer ask teachers to grade the preliminary exam. All answers will be placed on an answer sheet for scanning. These sheets and the papers showing the student work on the open-response problems will be mailed to AAPT for grading. New Fee StructureWe have changed the fee structure to encourage more students to participate. The new fee will be $30 per school, plus $7.00 per student for 5 or fewer students; $6.00 per student for 6 – 15 students; $5.00 per student for 16 or more students. We would like to strongly encourage you to have your physics students participate in the program. Even if you have not had your students participate in the past, we hope that these improvements will mean that you will enter your students this year. We believe that there are significant educational benefi ts to your students in preparing for and taking the preliminary exam, even if you don’t think that your students will ultimately make the team. Application Deadline: January 10, 2007Preliminary exams will be mailed out shortly after the application deadline. They are to be administered under normal test conditions. You will need to arrange a two-hour block of time to conduct the exam sometime between the dates of February 1 – 13. |
BlogsNew Physics Achievement Award ProgramThe highest scoring student on the preliminary exam from each school having five or more students participating will be recognized with a special award. More information about this Top Student Award will be available on the AAPT website in January. Semi-Finalist Award ProgramStudents who qualify for the second screening exam are among the brightest and most motivated. They represent the top 200 physics students in the U.S. All semi-finalists, their schools, and their teachers, will receive special awards, suitable for presentation at an honors assembly. |

In prior years, the Physics_Team Training Camp was used to select the fi ve representatives of the U.S. Physics_Team who would travel to the International Physics Olympiad.
In 2007, the International Physics Olympiad competition is scheduled to be held in July in Isfahan, Iran. In view of the current international controversies surrounding Iran and the U.S. State Department’s travel warning, we have signifi cant concerns regarding the travel of the U.S. students and coaches to the international event. We are very grateful for the hosts’ generous hospitality and recognize their collegiality, but we may be compelled to forgo competing in Iran for the international event unless the escalating political climate substantially improves.
Begin preparing your students for the U.S. Physics_Team screening exam with the Physics_Team Exam CD-ROM.
The AAPT Physics_Team Exam CD is the perfect tool for real test practicing. The best way to prepare for the screening exam is to review past exams and work through actual physics-competition-style problems. The multiple choice and open source questions are an excellent way to enhance student understanding of fundamental concepts, identify weak areas, and improve problem-solving speed and accuracy. In addition, you will discover how your students compare with the competition.
