Abstract:
|
I describe changes to my personal understanding of good physics teaching and learning as a result of participating in an alternate teacher certification program for high school physics teachers at the State University of New York (SUNY) - Buffalo State College (BSC). My perspective is that of a career-changing industrial Ph.D. physicist with 20 years experience in the telecommunications industry. Before this program, my initial conceptions of good teaching and learning were fairly traditional and based on my own experiences as a student, but my understanding of good teaching and learning were changed radically. I now believe that students should experience phenomena through multiple senses, student discourse and verbalization should be encouraged, and students should participate in unstructured and open-ended laboratory activities. Program elements of the BSC alternative certification program that fostered these changes are identified, including student-mode experiences, an emphasis on student discourse and whiteboarding, and guided reflections.
