Abstract: The study of astronomy is vast both in space and time. To students, the 15-week tour of the universe is often little more than a series of facts and figures related to objects beyond reach or comprehension; there is little connection to their human story. To them, our understanding of the universe seems fixed, not fluid. While students may learn the story of the physical universe, they fail to appreciate how our understanding of our human place in the cosmos has changed over time. The cosmic perspective timeline is a short activity that encourages students to consider the timing of the key shifts in our understanding of the universe and to appreciate the changing nature of science.
