Title: Drops, Bubbles, Ripples and Interference
Student: Olga Navros
School: North Carolina School of Science and Math, Durham, NC
Teacher: Loren Winters

This photograph shows a falling water drop passing through a flat soap film enclosed by a circular wire tilted at an angle toward the camera such that the underside of the soap film is visible allowing interference patterns that result from thin-film interference to be seen. The different colored bands toward the middle of the soap film are a result of constructive interference for particular wavelengths of light that reflect off the upper and lower layers of the film. As the drop stretches the film, the film eventually breaks at the bottom of the drop and travels up around the drop. This distorts the drop slightly and produces small ripples on the surface of the drop. It is important to note that the dome-shaped bubble on top of the water drop, which is also the result of the film traveling around the drop, is not part of the drop, which itself is flattened.
