Presidential Chain

The Presidential Chain
Note: It is the policy of AAPT to provide the costs of travel and subsistence for its elected officers in those cases where the individual is unable to obtain full or partial support from other sources. Such reimbursement is subject to AAPT policies provided on the AAPT Travel Expense Voucher.

A. Vice President
The candidate elected Vice President embarks on a four-year sequence of offices. The title changes each year, from Vice President to President-elect to President and, finally, to Past President. The candidate elected in a given year (20XX) assumes office at the close of the next Annual Meeting of the Association (Winter Meeting, 20XX+1).

During all four years in office the elected candidate serves as a member of the AAPT Executive Board, which has immediate responsibility for the affairs of the Association. The Board always meets at the time of the Association's winter and summer meetings, usually on the day before these meetings and later during the meeting. Thus the Board Member's obligation for formal meetings includes from 14 to 16 days per year, not including special meetings or committee assignments at other times. On infrequent occasions there have been special, additional meetings of the Executive Board. With membership in the Executive Board goes membership on the AAPT Council. The Council normally meets once a year, during the Association's winter meeting.

During the summer meeting following his or her election, the Vice President begins a one-year term as Chair of the Programs Committee and becomes responsible for planning the next two national meetings (winter and summer) and for providing coordination and communication among the Area Committees. The Programs Committee usually meets twice during each national meeting, once toward the beginning of the meeting and again toward the end. The recent tradition has been that during the summer meeting the President-elect chairs the first meeting of the Programs Committee, and the Vice President chairs the second and final meeting of this committee. The candidate elected in year 20xx is responsible for the two meetings in 20xx+2.

Although it is not automatic, it is likely that during these years of service the elected candidate will be elected to serve as a member of the Governing Board of the American Institute of Physics. This group normally meets in March and October each year, and has committees that may meet at other times.

B. President-elect
Each year the President-elect must appoint one member to each of the AAPT Area Committees. (If one or more committee members have resigned, the President-elect may also appoint replacements to fill out the remainders of the terms.) The President-elect must also designate a Chair for the next year for each Area Committee from among that committee's new or current members. All committee appointments are to be made early enough to be printed in the Spring Announcer.

C. President
The President, as chief officer of the Association, has the duty of presiding at all formal meetings of the Association, of the Council, and of the Executive Board. The President has the implied duty of supplying leadership and direction for the Association. The President also begins a two-year term as a member of the AAPT Awards Committee, which meets at the times of the Association's meetings.

The President has authority to appoint one-year temporary committees as they are needed or as they may be requested by the Council or Executive Board. Most presidents have, in fact, appointed such committees. The President appoints a former President (not the then current Past President) to serve as Teller for that year's election. Presidents also are frequently invited to participate in meetings of AAPT Sections in various parts of the country. Sometimes they are invited to represent AAPT on commemorative occasions. On occasion they are asked to represent AAPT before investigative bodies such as congressional committees.

D. Past President
The Past President is Chair of the Awards Committee and the Review Board. The Past President also serves on the Publications Committee and may serve on the Audit Committee.
