Biography
I was born on September 22, 1987 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and attended the Montessori School of Raleigh from Pre-K through second grade. When I was seven, my parents bought me a telescope, and I have been interested in space exploration ever since. I moved to Plano, Texas in 1995, attending the St. Alcuin Montessori School for third and fourth grade and Prince of Peace Catholic School for fifth grade. By the end of third grade I had completed the entire Montessori elementary math program.
In 1998, I moved to North Andover, Massachusetts, and attended the North Andover Middle School sixth through eighth grades. During that time, I was recognized in the National Mathematics Talent Search by Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth (CTY) for scoring at or above 700 on the SAT I – Math portion before age 13. This qualified me to attend the CTY summer program in the summers following seventh and eighth grade. Through the CTY program, I took geometry and all of pre-calculus.
Having completed pre-calculus, I started calculus in ninth grade at Phillips Academy. Also, unlike most students who take biology in ninth grade, I decided to take first year physics, knowing I would enjoy it. During ninth grade, I won the Phillips Academy Wadsworth Prize, the award given for the top first year physics students, and I also qualified for the 2002 USAMO and MOSP, both of which were for the top 250 math students in the country.
In 10th grade, I won the Roy Lane award in the Massachusetts Math Olympiad contest, awarded to the top ninth or 10th grader not in the top 20 overall. I also won fourth place in the annual Phillips Academy Watt Prize Exam, designed for all students who have taken calculus, and qualified to be on the Eastern Massachusetts team for the ARML contest. In 11th grade, I took second year AP Physics for the first two terms, and I took a course in advance mechanics in the winter term.
For extra-curricular activities, I have played tennis for recreation, and taken private voice lessons for all three years I have been at Phillips Academy. When I have free time, I write computer programs, normally focused on number theory. This year, I began tutoring other students in math, chemistry, and physics. Presently, I am taking a one term course in quantum mechanics, and I plan on pursuing a career in physics.
