Title: Break Wall Diffraction
Student: Elizabeth Martin
School: Prospect High School, Mt. Prospect, IL
Teacher: Keith Bellof
This picture of a break wall on Lake Michigan was taken from the top of the John Hancock Building in the late evening, which explains the long shadows. The real beauty of the picture, however, is in the diffraction pattern that occurs when the water waves pass through the opening in the break wall. As the waves move through the opening, they expand in an expanding circular pattern. The semi-circular waves coming from the bottom left-hand corner of the picture are actually coming from another opening in the break wall.
