In the photograph, light goes through a bottle filled with water, making the striped background appear to completely change directions and to even begin to curve on the ends. The light traveling through the bottle goes from air to the more dense glass, and then to water, which is in between the two, causing the light to slow down and speed up accordingly. This is what causes the light to bend.
