Title: Bending Water
Student: Matthew Claspill
School: Helias High School, Jefferson City, MO
Teacher: Matt Zeitz

I took an uncharged balloon and rubbed it on my uncharged hair. This caused my hair to become positively charged and the balloon to become negatively charged. I held the balloon close to a small stream of water coming out of a faucet. The neutrally charged water was attracted to the negatively charged balloon because the water molecules were polarized. One end of each molecule had a positive charge and the other end had a negative charge. The molecules oriented themselves so that their positive ends were pointing toward the balloon. This alignment caused the attractive force between the positive ends of the water molecules and the balloon to overpower the repulsive force between the negative ends of the water molecules and the balloon.
