Title: Smoke Plumes
Student: Rona Stephanopoulos
School: The Winsor School, Boston, MA
Teacher: Denise Labieniec

This photo shows the smoke from a burning incense stick rising in a column and suddenly transforming into a circular pattern before breaking up into an irregular collection of eddies. The smoke helps us visualize the movement of hot air as it rises from the heat of the burning stick. At the lower part of the picture close to the stick, the air moves slowly and attractive forces hold the layers of smoke together. As the air rises away from the stick, it accelerates, making it difficult for the attractive forces to keep the air layers together. Thus, after some distance, the air layers lose contact with one another and move upward in separate paths. The initial orderly movement is replaced by spirals and chaotic motion called turbulence. The photo captures the transition from the initial phase of the column rising in laminar flow to the second phase of moving in the chaos of the turbulence.
